Rebutting Dahlia Coffee: The Sweet Side of Flight
by: Adam Houle
The poems 'Handyman' and 'Shaking Because I’m Tired' are also in #7
So what? I’m the man
of a million goodbyes.
I don’t blame it on stars,
on rising or falling
constellations. Muck
rivers and clay beds
don’t speak to me.
I hear no one’s name
in dry rattles of dead
leaves across the lawn.
At 3 AM, I’m reading
Watership Down in thin
glows from Jesus the Nightlight.
I only count stars
on smoke breaks. I believe
in the courage of rabbits.
In the tenacity of all things
hunted to never stop looking
back. To gnaw off their legs
if necessary, pining
nothing as they suck
hot wind between flights.
