Water Them
by: Jodi Vander Molen

10 p.m. quiet on the couch

look up at
the two plants near the window
hanging
from their
chains

yes, again i see that curl
they have needed care
a week

sometimes i reach up,
turn each pot by its base

so
each side
each leaf
sees a slip of sky

eyes know
with furrowed brow
and cringe
that
they are thirsty

but

limbs
weigh like
wood

too heavy
to lift
from the couch

it gets so hard
to water the flowers
these days

and yet
i think
we must
