  Wisconsin Public Television Auction
June 4th, 2004

PGI volunteers participated in the annual Wisconsin Public Television Auction on June 4th. Brad Harkins, Jodi Vander Molen, Erin Martin, Eric Rossborough and Yogesh Chawla hooted and hollered from the front row as they took bids and ate as much free food as they could. Check out their cool T shirts. Contact PGI if you would like to buy one of them. We hope to do it again next year.

FELIX: A Series of New Writing
January 29, 2004
Special Collections, Memorial Library

The second in the FELIX series brought together editors and contributors from Madison literary journals The Styles and Premiere Generation Ink to read their work, and participate in a discussion about literary "little magazines."

Named after Felix Pollak (1909-1987), poet and former curator of Special Collections, this new lecture series seeks original, young writers in the area and provides a forum for conversation on the role of the "little magazine" in literary culture and how these journals continue to evolve. Past discussions have focused on the emerging online little magazine culture and the necessity of an experimental literary voice for young writers.

The event was accompanied by an exhibit of titles from Special Collection’s Little Magazines which featured PGI. The series is organized by graduate students Barry Osborne and David Pavelich.

Fundraiser for A Bridge of Hope
December 2003
In The Company of Thieves Coffeehouse

In December 2003, PGI held a holiday fundraiser for El Puente De Esperanza (A Bridge of Hope). El Puente de Esperanza is a residential educational facility in the Historic Center of Querétaro, Mexico. Program participants come from very poor rural villages in the Sierra Gorda Mountains, and the indigenous Otomí village of San Ildefonso.

Madison poets and citizens raised over 3 boxes of art supplies and a hundred dollars for the kids. Donations included boxes of glue, construction paper, safety scissors, markers, crayons, books, colored pencils, soccer balls, etc. The donations and gifts were made in the name of Sachin and Erin Pandya; they are PGI volunteers who moved to Mexico to volunteer for A Bridge of Hope. Please donate some time or money to A Bridge of Hope.

Thank you letter from the kids

Check out our new cool supplies!

Time to read some poetry, yeah right!

  Wisconsin Book Festival
October 2003
"What do poetry editors want?"

PGI editor Miriam Hall participated on a panel that included editors from Rosebud, The Progressive and Sam Hammill, founder of the Poets Against The War movement. The audience listened to a brief presentation from each of the magazines and then there was a question and answer period.

In addition, PGI staff members hosted each night of the Poetry Salon/Open Mic at Michelangelo’s Coffee House. New and experienced poets were able to mix on equal footing and audiences heard a sampling of vibrant poetry in the making. The poet’s books were also for sale at a special, attended poetry book table.

  Poetry Coup!
July 26th 2003
Madison Farmer's Market

On Saturday July 26th, Madison Poets stormed the Farmer's Market and bombarded the fruit shoppers and confused onlookers with metaphors and words. Although there was a unhappy Farmer's Market manager and a jolly old cop who could not contain his amusement, the event was a smashing success. Come to the next Coup and bring your words, your art, and your sense of community. To find out about the next Coup, keep your ear to the street for the rumors and rumblings.

On April 27th 2002, PGI and MAPC co-hosted the Speak Out! Publication Release Party at the Electric Earth Café.

PGI Moon Watching Nights
Reynolds Park, Morrison Park

During the fall and summer, PGI hosts Moon Watching nights at 9:00 pm to coincide with celestial events and the full moon. The inspiration for these events dates back to the Heian Era (794-1192) in Japan. Poets would gather to watch the moon, listen to classical music, and write Haiku and poetry. People are encouraged to attend future moon watchings and bring their writing journal, lucky pen, visual art and painting supplies and their favorite poems about the moon or tranquil peaceful nights. Please email moonwatch(a)pgink.com and for an email with full details about the event.
